Here to a close look of creativity, community, and opportunity on the same ground.

A state-of-the-art basketball court has been constructed at the Mji wa Furaha Compound, replacing the old one with a vibrant hub for young people. Facilitated by the Benedictine Volunteer Corps, the court was designed by a professional graphic designer using original artwork created by Alfajiri artists, alongside the logos of the Benedictine Volunteer Corps, KCCB, and Alfajiri Street Kids Art. The final design was proudly painted by our own Alfajiri artists.
The first game was played in an atmosphere full of joy and enthusiasm, bringing together street boys, Alfajiri artists, and members of the American Benedictine Volunteer Corps. More than a place to play, the court now offers opportunities for youth in the area to develop their talents, build confidence, and feel pride and hope through sport. Tournaments will be held during the year, and the space is already being used for dance, karate, and other activities; further enriching the Drop-In Centre program.
As part of this initiative, Alfajiri artists received training in graphic design and will be employed in future basketball court projects by the company that installed the court.
Wholistic growth
What does determination look like in the heart of the slums? In Mathare, it looks like fifty women showing up week after week, ready to learn, grow, and change the future of their families.

Alfajiri proudly celebrated the graduation of the second cohort of the Street Business School, with around fifty dedicated mothers and women completing the program. For four months, these women committed to two-hour classes held once a week, balancing family responsibilities, economic pressure, and daily challenges while remaining consistent and focused.
Graduation was earned. Each participant was required to start a small business, putting into practice what they had learned. Our business coach visited the enterprises and was impressed by the creativity, resilience, and determination on display. These women transformed limited resources into income generating activities that now enable them to support their families.
The program extended beyond business skills. Through training in positive parenting, counselling, women empowerment, and self-belief, the women grew in confidence and purpose. Many shared how the sessions helped them strengthen their families and see themselves as capable leaders within their communities.

The celebration was made even more meaningful with a meal prepared by two former street boys who are now trained and qualified chefs through Alfajiri programs, a powerful reflection of transformation in action.
As these women move forward with confidence, their impact is already being felt in their homes and across the community. Stay tuned for the next class as we continue impacting communities and impacting lives.
