Godfrey Kuria
Godfrey Kuria is a Kenyan painter whose work reflects his resilience in the face of great struggles. Born and raised in Mathare, he developed a passion for drawing and painting at a young age. Godfrey is a gentle and focused dreamer; his work is his escape from the brutal realities of ghetto living and despair. He has had mentoring from local artists and visiting professionals and has already exhibited at Nairobi Museum, local galleries, and overseas. His paintings have elements of nature, capturing stories of struggle, hope, and transformation. In addition to his own practice, Godfrey works with young artists in his community and former school, using art as a tool for empowerment and change. Godfrey has recently started upskilling by taking a nail technology course. He has shifted away from the dangerous area of the ghetto to a safer location under the guidance of Alfajiri. With sales of his own paintings, he has begun a course in Nail technology which will give him skills to earn a regular income. Godfrey has great hopes for his future.
