Miami Boys
Stephen, Reuben, and Simon (pictured left to right above), aren’t just artists- they’re change makers. As participants in Alfajiri’s Beautifying Mathare initiative, they’ve put their hands, hearts, and paintbrushes to work transforming Nairobi’s informal settlements, one wall and one street at a time. Through murals, clean-up efforts, and community mobilization, they helped shape the initiative into a movement. Their artwork tells stories of hope, self-determination, and dignity, because they live it every day. These young men and their community are a perfect example of what youth empowerment looks like. Stephen, Reuben, and Simon are beginning to expand from their work beautifying the slums, making their own beautiful artworks.

Empowering
Growth Through Murals
Working on murals in the community of Mathare has been an illuminating experience for all our artists. The Miami boys participated with other Alfajiri artists, (above) to change the face of shops and private homes in sections of Mathare. Having learned in workshops via zoom at Alfajiri with Lily Yeh an American educator in mural making, specifically in slum areas, they ended by painting their own houses and spaces near the river where they live. Murals are still being created in public places, as all Alfajiri artists encourage each other.
