The Miami Boys
Stephen, Reuben, and Simon (pictured left to right above), aren’t just artists- they’re changemakers. As leaders in Alfajiri’s Beautifying Mathare initiative, they’ve put their hands, hearts, and paintbrushes to work transforming Nairobi’s informal settlements, one wall and one street at a time. Through murals, clean-up efforts, and community mobilization, their early work helped shape the initiative into a movement. Their artwork tells stories of hope, self-determination, and dignity, because they live it every day. These young men and their community are a perfect example of what youth empowerment looks like. Stephen, Reuben, and Simon are beginning to expand from their work beautifying the slums, making their own beautiful artworks.

"Miami Beach" Community
Stephen, Reuben, and Simon brought their "Beautifying Mathare" mission home to their own corner of the Mathare slum known as "Miami Beach". What was once an abandoned, trash-filled area is now a vibrant space full of color, crops, murals, and meaning. They’ve led daily cleanups, planted trees for each boy involved, and used earnings from crop sales to fund continued improvements. Their community space now features an outdoor meeting area they call Parliament, etched with powerful messages like: “We Fall, We Rise,” "If we lose our fear, they lose their power,” and “Peace, Love, Unity, and Harmony.”
